Most commonly a three stone ring, which is the usual term in Australia and the US. You will also see:

Trilogy ring — the same design, more common in the UK.

Past present future ring — named for what the three stones are taken to represent.

Trinity ring — used occasionally, though it also refers to a different interlocking-band design, so it can cause confusion.

All describe a centre stone with one stone either side. If you are searching, three stone and trilogy will bring up the same thing.

The three stones are usually taken to represent a couple's past, present and future — where you have been, where you are, and what is ahead. It is the reason the style is chosen as often for anniversaries and milestone gifts as for engagements. Some people read them as friendship, love and fidelity instead. Neither meaning is official, and plenty of people simply like how it looks.

Oval is the most requested at the moment. The elongated outline flows into curved side stones, and it gives a wide, elegant spread across the finger.

Round brilliant remains the classic and suits every side stone combination. If you are unsure, it is the shape that cannot be wrong.

Emerald cut has grown considerably. The straight lines pair beautifully with tapered baguettes, and it makes the most architectural version of the design.

Cushion and radiant both work well, particularly with half-moons or trapezoids sitting flush against the outline.

Pear and marquise are less common but genuinely striking, especially with a pair of smaller matching stones.

Almost any shape works in a three stone — it is one of the most forgiving designs there is. The choice matters more for what it pairs with than for whether it suits the style.

A few pairings come up again and again, because they genuinely work.

Round centre with trilliants — the classic. The triangles give a wide, strong shoulder and lead the eye straight into the centre stone. Probably the most requested combination we make.

Oval centre with pears — the curves flow into one another, so the ring reads as one continuous line rather than three separate stones. Elegant, and very popular at the moment.

Coloured gemstone centre with matching diamond side stones — a sapphire, emerald or ruby in the centre with a matched pair of white diamonds either side. It is one of the most requested designs we make, and the contrast does the work: the diamonds throw light outward while the coloured stone holds it in, so each makes the other more obvious. A blue sapphire flanked by white diamonds reads bluer than it would alone. Trilliants, half-moons and pears all suit this arrangement.

Emerald cut centre with tapered baguettes — step cut beside step cut, all straight lines. Quietly architectural and unmistakably Art Deco.

Round or oval centre with half-moons — softer than trilliants, and the flat edge sits flush against the centre with no gap.

Cushion or radiant centre with trapezoids — the angled sides follow the outline of the centre stone precisely.

Three matched stones the same size — a distinct look rather than a variation on the others. Three rounds, three ovals or three emerald cuts of equal weight reads as deliberate and modern.

The right combination depends on your centre stone, so it is worth choosing them together. We hold both the diamonds and the coloured stones, and everything is made to order in our own workshop.

Usually, and by a clear margin — the centre stone should read as the centre. A common proportion is side stones around a quarter to a third of the centre's weight each. Matched three stone rings, where all three are the same size, are a distinct and quite striking look, but they are a deliberate choice rather than the default.

Yes, and it is the part that takes the work. The two stones need to agree on colour, clarity, outline and depth, and they need to sit correctly against your particular centre stone. Buying them separately rarely produces a good result. We match them against the centre rather than to a number on a certificate.

Yes — most of what we make is designed with the client rather than picked off a shelf. Bring a sketch, a photo, a screenshot, or just a description of what you have in mind. We will talk through the stones, the proportions and the setting, and build it from there.

Everything is made to order in our own workshop in Sydney, so the ring is built around your particular stones rather than the stones squeezed into a stock mount. That matters more in a three stone than almost any other design, because the side stones have to sit correctly against the centre.

18ct white, yellow or rose gold, or platinum. Platinum is the most hard-wearing and holds claws securely over decades, which is worth considering when a ring carries three stones. White gold is plated with rhodium for whiteness and wants re-plating every few years; platinum does not.

Mixed metals are also an option — a yellow gold band with a white gold or platinum setting head, so the claws disappear against the diamonds while the band stays warm. It is a detail people often do not know they can ask for.

Then it becomes a five stone, or a graduated design, and both are lovely. A five stone runs a centre with two progressively smaller stones each side, which gives a longer line across the finger. You can keep going from there.

You can also add small stones behind the main three — a pair of trilliants with pavé running down the shoulders behind them, for instance — which softens the transition into the band without changing the three stone character.

Yes, and it is a common addition. Pavé sets small diamonds along the top of the band; channel set runs them flush between two walls of metal; a half-eternity band carries them around the front half of the ring. Any of these work with a three stone.

Two things worth knowing. Diamonds in the band make resizing more difficult later, so it is worth getting the size right — we would rather size it properly at the start than cut into a set band afterwards. And a heavily set band competes with the side stones for attention, so on a three stone we would often suggest keeping the band simpler than you might on a solitaire.

Not necessarily. There are more stones, but the centre can be smaller while the ring still reads as substantial — three stones spread across the finger cover more ground than one. Where a solitaire puts everything into a single stone, a three stone spreads the budget. Which works out cheaper depends entirely on what you choose.

Yes, provided the side stones are properly set. More stones means more settings to maintain, so it is worth having the claws checked every year or two — but that is true of any ring with accent stones. Pointed side stones like pears and trilliants want protecting at the tips.

No. Every diamond we sell is a natural diamond, and we've never dealt in lab-grown, simulants or treated stones.

A lab-grown stone is a manufactured product. It's grown in a reactor over a few weeks, then mass produced in unlimited quantities in any size or grade. That's the fundamental difference: a natural diamond took billions of years to form and exists in finite supply, while a laboratory-grown one is a commodity with no ceiling on production. It shows in the pricing — as capacity has scaled, lab-grown prices have fallen steeply and continue to fall, and there is no established secondary market for them.

Our diamonds are independently certified, most commonly by GIA, with others graded by DCLA or HRD. The certificate is issued by the laboratory, not by us, and it accompanies the stone when it ships.

Yes. We are in Sydney's CBD and we see clients by appointment, so you can view stones side by side and compare them in person before deciding.

Our list is smaller than you'll see on some sites, and that's deliberate. Every diamond here is one we've looked at properly before listing it. Many diamond websites show tens or hundreds of thousands of stones drawn from shared trade lists — diamonds held elsewhere that the seller hasn't seen and won't see unless you order one. It looks like more choice, but nobody has assessed the individual stone, and two diamonds with the same details on paper can look quite different.

If we can't find the right thing at your budget, we'll say so and talk through the options — sometimes a small change in colour, clarity or size makes all the difference.
