These are face-up views of “Old European Cut” (below) [ sometimes referred to as the Peruzzi Cut ] and “Old Mine Cut” (above) diamonds like those that were prevalent when Tolkowsky wrote Diamond Design. The European cut diamond looks somewhat modern, but has a larger culet and a very small table (45%) by modern standards. (Since old-cut diamonds came in a variety of shapes, the diamonds above should only be considered examples of their cut types.)

My passion for old mine cuts has led me down the gem path of never ending quality diamond consumption once again. Is there no stopping me? Probably not. It’s addictive.

As one of my close colleagues, Mr David Schott , Member of the Israel Diamond Exchange once said and I quote him:

“Every Stone a Picture”

***
These diamonds have more personality and timelessness than their modern cut counterparts of today.
While being cut with less than exacting proportions, these diamonds have a beauty and magic of their own which give them a desirable, distinct beauty just as the bygone era in which they were fashioned and represent. This cutting style began to disappear around the turn of the last century.
And how true it is when louping these gem babies, their primitive unsophisticated cuts, different length to width ratios, small table and deep pavillions are unpredictable and mesmerizing when compared to the sharp clean symmetrical lines of modern cut diamonds today.

There is something very romantic about these lumpy irregular shaped diamonds, these predecessors to the modern cushion cuts and round brilliants.

Their lively scintillation and fire sometimes with unusual internal inclusions are hypnotic, each diamond unique and individual with an unparalleled soft looking romantic glow that many find appealing.Often seen in antique and art deco jewellery pieces, there is a demand for these old mine cut diamonds either for replacement of lost diamonds or re created antique styles of jewellery which are making a renaissance amongst those creative jewellers who have clients with a common passion.

Three Facts About Old Cut Diamonds
1)
” Old European Cut Diamonds and Old Mine Cuts tend to “mask” their true body color especially when mounted in a piece of jewelry for the following reasons: They were hand faceted with less than concise proportions and consequently do not reflect light as brilliantly as does their modern faceted counterpart: “The Modern Round Brilliant.” This attribute allows for a diamond of lesser color to appear more colorless when mounted in jewelry.
2)
Many of the old European and old mine faceted diamonds were mined in South Africa and have a slight to strong degree of natural fluorescence inherent in their crystalline structure caused predominantly by varying degrees of nitrogen levels. This characteristic may enhance the overall brilliance of a diamond and can be an asset. Only when an oily appearence is viewed from strong fluorescence does this characteristic prove to be undesireable.
3)
Old European as well as Old Mine Diamonds become rarer each day due to the fact that most of these fine older diamonds have been recut to modern proportions to enhance profit margins and saleablity in today’s modern jewelry pieces. These older cut diamonds are quite frequently less expensive by significant amounts than modern faceted diamonds.”

Another bonus is that their prices are considerably more affordable which is an advantage compared to the modern cuts. Simply, you acquire a lot more diamond for your money weight wise, providing it’s the cutting style that appeals to you, for a lot less.

It’s a strange and contrasting pleasant paradox how

old mine cut diamonds seem to be growing more and more in popularity by those who are true lovers of diamonds in an age where hi tech computer aided diamond manufacturing is now dominating the whole diamond industry worldwide. There is a simple naive beauty in their primitiveness.

In due time I hope to have these exquisite gems listed some accompanying micro photographs. Some of the previous stock is already listed there. However the photographs do not do justice to these diamonds of yesteryear because when viewing the fine differences and nuances, each individual gem is unique and the difference in face up patterns is unlimited.

Here is a list of new “old miners” certified and laser inscribed by the Diamond Certification Laboratory of Australia. I doubt anyone would normally laser inscribe an old mine cut but in this day and age of unidentifiable synthetics it is my belief these diamond are more easily assumed to be natural because of their appearance. If anything the case is quite the opposite. Synthetic diamonds can easily be cut and reproduced in the appearance of an old mine cut quicker and with less precision than that of a modern cut diamond. I recall hearing of synthetic red ruby imitating natural rough soiled and scratched also cut in this fashion to trick the unsuspecting buyer who thought they were buying a bargain. The same can be done to synthetic diamonds.
